Space……….for Norma

What is “space”.  Space can be a place you live, it can be what you look to at night, it can be what you give someone.

My step-daughters life has been turned upside down by the adults in her life.  Not to mention that she has entered that oh so wonderful stage of life called the “tweens”.  I remember how much my life changed when I went to middle school.  Finally finding a group of girls that I could relate to and be friends with…and David Gilman…that first real crush.

I digress.

My step-daughter recently told me that AIM is pronounced A-I-M as in the initials not AIM…like aiming a gun.  She was concerned that I may be embarrassed if I said it wrong.  Well, let me tell ya…as an IT person I have heard it called AIM…as in aim a gun.  Second, I could give a shit what other people think of me.

Most recently she has decided that she is no longer comfortable around me.  And that’s fine.  I have always accepted my step kids; loved them, listened to them, expected respect from them, and tried to understand what it may feel like to be a kid who’s parents were never married.  I have always hoped that Charley and I, along with my parents, can be role models of a stable marriage.  I spent hours listening to her, counselling her, doing projects with her, having a blast with her and, drying her tears when life was too tough and she felt I was the only one she could talk to.

So, now that she has asked for space that is all I can do for her.

Take all the space you need kid.  I’ll be here to love you when you are ready.
